Visit to Caledonian Brewery : 27 March 2010

Nearly 20 Branch members made the trip across to the far east to enjoy the hospitality of the Caledonian Brewery. An introduction to the brewing process and a tour of the brewery istelf was followed by some samples of the finished product. This was a very successful Branch social which was enjoyed by everyone. We would like to thank the Caledonian Brewery for their very generous hospitality. Some photos of the trip can be found on our photo archive - click on the picture on the right to see them.

Islay Black Rock Ale becomes Scotland's Champoin Bottle Conditioned Beer : 3 October 2009

Our congratulations go to Islay Ales, whose best bitter, Black Rock Ale, became Scotland's Champion Bottle Conditioned Beer during the Ayrshire Beer Festival in Troon. The beer beat five other finalists to win the award and the staff at the brewery are very pleased with the result.

Presentation to the Weavers, Strathaven : 2009 Lanarkshire Pub of the Year : 12 December 2009

A modern pub with a historical name, relating to the town's industry in Victorian times, gets CAMRA's Lanarkshire Pub of the Year award. In the picture Tom Ord presents the certificate to a delighted landlord, Brendan Smith. In accepting the award Brendan gave a few kind words about John Kelly, former Branch Chairman and Lanarkshire beer hunter who died about six weeks ago. John frequently made the long trip to Strathaven and always enjoyed the beer at the Weavers.

Presentation to the Tigh-an-Truish : 2009 Argyll Pub of the Year : 28 November 2009

A mini-bus full of CAMRA members took the high road past Loch Lomond through to the west coast and over the Atlantic bridge to Seil. Here we found the "Tigh-an-Truish" (in English the House of the Trousers) which has for many years been one of our favourite Argyll pubs and, for 2009, became our Argyll Pub of the Year.

The hotel gets its name from the mid 18th century when it was illegal to wear a kilt but the law was not policed on the islands. The Tigh-an-Truish was the perfect place for the travelling islanders to change their clothing before moving on to the mainland.

CAMRA celebrates 35 years in Scotland : 21 November 2009

CAMRA has now had a presence in Scotland for 35 years and what better way to underline the fact than to share a giant pint-shaped birthday cake with representatives from all the branches in Scotland. The cake was delicious, just like the beer.

The picture shows Lindsay Grant, Robin Jones and Colin Valentine just prior to the cutting of the cake.
