The Members' Weekend 2005 in Glasgow
Well, after two and a half year's planning, it seemed to be all over in a flash and the Organising Committee were all singing the Proclaimer's hit single "It's over an' dun way, it's over an' dun way!" at the top of our voices - well internally anyway - on the Sunday at 4 o'clock!
As Organiser my thanks go to various people:
Please note that these thanks are as I remember them, and not in any order.
Although it was over for many at 4.00 pm on Sunday, great thanks must go to the Glasgow & West of Scotland Branch members who were there from 8.45am till 7.30pm for the take down and those who turned up to help with the cask and scaffolding removal on the Monday.
To those members in the Scottish and Northern Ireland Branches who managed to attend the event in Glasgow, and especially if you gave your time as a staff member, I would like to offer you a great vote of thanks. To those from further afield than the host branches, who worked to make the event the success it was, I thank you as well.
There are some individuals I would especially like to thank and these persons are listed below. Obviously, if I missed out naming you individually, I apologise in advance, but the whole team of workers deserve great praise!
To those members who helped with the onerous task of washing 800+ glasses individually on a hedgehog thingy before the Members' Bar opened, and again on Saturday and Sunday mornings and finally on Sunday afternoon, I thank you.
To Jim Strang and Andrew Haswell, our Members' Bar Managers, what can I say? The choice and range of Scottish and Northern Ireland beers was acclaimed by every person I spoke to, from NE members through to members who do not involve themselves in CAMRA business but came along to see what was happening. Their team of servers were very informative to our visitors about our unusual (to them) beers and a lot of praise was given to me to pass on. To Swampy and Andy from HQ who helped so much with the bar set-up, the cooling system, looking after the beers and the take down. Thank you to all bar staff, especially Andrew and Jim. The only complaint was the annual one of… Why does it take so long to buy a pint after the close of business at the Conference on the Sunday at the Members' Bar? One easy answer - if the first ten people into the bar poured the next ten people a pint after getting their pint poured, and so on, then this would not be a problem.
To Ted Sharp and his team of trusty tellers, who do an unseen job until they are called upon to do a count of hands, I thank you. I hope you enjoyed the Conference. Thanks for staying awake!
